Osama Bin Laden died an un-martyred death, at the hands of a family member of one of the 9/11 hijackers.
Osama sealed his fate when he let himself be videoed taped while talking to a quadriplegic sheik about Al Qaeda's accomplishments on 9/11. In the tape, Bin Laden laughs at the stupid Americans, whose system crumbled under the plans of Al Qaeda. If Osama had carried out his attack by the rules of his Prophet, it would not have mattered how "stupid" the Americans had been. The 9/11 hijackers would have been an extension of their God's hand and would have prevailed. As it was they became merely an extension of Osama's hand, they prevailed but at what cost?
Perhaps that cost is not too great that his life could not be spared, but to go as a martyr, I do not think so. Would Islam let such a story of martyrdom enter their history? Again, I don't think so.
While after talking to the Sheik, Osama escaped the capture by his enemies; he could not escape his fate. While I always thought we should have gone into Pakistan after Bin Laden, it is clear we made the correct decision. To do so would have given him a martyrdom he did not deserve.
