While Iraq has become the center of gravity on this global war on terror, perhaps another center of gravity needs more immediate attention. That new center is in Africa.
While the US military has started this new campaign by its introduction of Africom, it is meeting strong resistance by Africa nations who are understandably hesitant about having a US military presence in their backyard. Any US military presence could be used as a focal point for terriorst activity.
In answer to their wishes, at least until the US military can bring more resources to Africa, the US navy and Marine Corp have decided to station Africom offshore. When the need to grant assistance against terrorist operations, to Africa nations, an amphibious option will be made available. While the resources to help the Africa nations will mostly be in the form of international planing for a terrorist event, there should be some resources available to directly help the people to resist the terrorist movement into Africa.
Of course the best way to help the people of Africa, might be to seek out and help those African leaders who have shown themselves as true leaders. These true leaders have resisted corruption, which has threatened most of Africa, has taken much of her wealth, and left her people wanting.
On the other hand, the leaders who enable this corruption to continue should be santioned. One way could be by restricting their movement upon the world stage. An effort should also be made at the local level to find leaders who are willing to find jobs for their people, improve education, and help build an infrastructure which Africa needs to compete on a world market. Possibly America also needs to open its market up to African products and import to Africa that which they found wanting.
