(Folks, Kin, Trades) were once described to me as the three horseman who brought great changes to the civilization of the world and made the USA what it is today, a great and powerful country. Actually the image of the trio was said to be three horses pulling together, three abreast, the sled (Troika) of civilization. I don't believe this is an inaccurate description.
Other names that we could assign to these horses are the domains of (physics, logic, ethics). Folks occupy the domain of physics, Kin occupies the domain of logic, and Trades occupy the domain of ethics. Perhaps it would be easier to think of these domains (physics, logic, ethics) as the domains that defines any working model of a displacement of energy, and (Folks, Kin, Trades) as defining a specific type of displacement of energy. The Physics of a displacement is its structure; the logic of the displacement is its command and control; and the Ethics is the internal force of a displacement, both positive and negative.
(Folks, Kin, Trades) defines a type of displacement that is much like a modern military displacement of energy. A modern military displacement forms its center of gravity in the domain of Ethics as it orients itself for an advantage to its environment. The environment that the displacement seeks an advantage to is that place between where the displacement has moved from and where it is moving to, the past to future.
The displacement of energy that defines itself by the domains (Folks, Kin, Trades) has its center of gravity within the domain of Trades. A center of gravity is the lead horse in the Troika.
A displacement orients itself to an advantage over its environment. This orientation then becomes its center of gravity and gives the displacement momentum to move between the past and future. The displacement of energy "picks" the domain of orientation by judging which domain has an advantage over others in the same environment. This advantage is in the relationship between the decision making and action of the displacement. The advantage is not only in the speed of decision making, but whose decisions are most accurate.
The (Folks, Kin, Trades) displacement judges itself to have an advantage, in the environment between past and present, when its center of gravity occupies the domain of Trades. The Orientation of the displacement becomes the Trades.
Ethics is the internal force, both positive and negative, of a displacement. Ethics is what the displacement (Folks, Kin, Trades) has judged to be at the center of its gravity and a place to orient itself to an advantage within its environment. The ethics or the internal force of any displacement is created by the image of the displacement's physics (structure) and the promise of the displacement's logic (command and control), to displace from the past to future. If the image becomes unclear and the promise broken, then the displacement loses its internal force. Without a strong self-image or a promise of a future, the decisions, of any displacement, as it moves from the past to the future, come slowly and no longer reflect the reality of its environment (inaccurate). Trades have an advantage.
Trades gives the displacement of energy occupying the domains of (Folks, Kin, Trades) an advantage by building a reality of its own. This reality is based on the exchange of information between the people of Trades. This information is both implicit and explicit. The implicit information represents the wealth of the Trades, while the explicit information makes the Trades rich. The implicit information gives the movement of Trades, between the past and future, a great potential. The explicit information makes the movement of Trades, between the past and future, successful. To maintain the momentum of the movement, there is a need to enforce the conformity of information, both implicit and explicit, between the people of Trades. If conformity is not present, in the exchange of information between the people of trades, then change may exert itself between the people of Trades. All change has a cost.
The cost, in the domain of Trades, will be in the momentum of the lead horse. The center of gravity may be lost, by losing its advantage, and the displacement may change directions. This new direction may be un-judged, as to having an advantage, and therefore represents an uncertain path. This path may not lead to the future.
Conformity is important in the orientation of the displacement, but growth and change may be wanted and needed in a displacement of energy. To allow for growth or change, in the displacement of energy called (Folks, Kin, Trades), diversity is generated in either the Folks (structure) or Kin (command and control) of the displacement. To allow for change and growth, the structure must be resilient and the logic adaptive. The structure must be able to absorb shocks, both internal and external, while still maintaining the general form of the displacement. The logic must command and control the displacement without interfering with the exchange of information between the people of trades. The logic must adapt to an ever-changing remedial action sequence of intern and external judgments.
As the sled and horses move forward they are displacing energy in a growing and changing image of the past and future. Although we can't see the sled in its past or future position, the potential is there that the sled has, in fact, displaced itself at both positions. The future image should be as clear as the image of the past, because both depend on the actions of our decisions, and the feed-back to the present. The only information we have as to our present position is in where we orient ourselves for an advantage to what we observe. That observation takes place in the environment between the past and future. We judge our decisions and actions on the explicit image of our Folks and the implicit image of our Kin. We judge, to conform or diversify, by the image of where the displacement has been and where it may go, and where we orient ourselves between the two. We orient ourselves by the image of our environment, and by doing so subvert our observations. If that image is a false image, then there is a chance that the displacement will never reach either potential, it will be subverted from reality. The only way to make sure the image is true and can be trusted is through liberal education.
4th generation warfare (4GW) is fought between our orientation and decision making. The space between the two is already a subversion of what we observe. We isolate and subvert ourselves to an advantage of our environment. 4GW simply takes this subversion and tries to make it its own or change it. Liberal education may or may not contribute to this subversion. The success of 4GW depends on the internal force, of the displacement, and its ability to remain strong. If we have, as the posting (http://www.tdaxp.com/archive/2006/01/22/liberal-education-part-i-the-petty-troika.html) suggests, "... a highly-cognitive elite, a middle morass of nothingness, and among far too many a need to belong." It is probably the fault of the Kin or Folks, of the movement; it is a generational thing. The 40-year-olds have spent so much of their lives, as the generations of the past did, rejecting the logic of their parents that they forgot to create one of their own. In other word, 4GW has attacked and destroyed a failing logic, that needs change. While a Liberal education may be able to replace this failed logic, it can really only protect (Folks, Kin, Trades) from 5th generational warfare (5GW), which is fought in the displacement's observation. Maybe the best warning would read: beware of false images.
"Capitalism allows the explosive crystallization of folk, kin, and trade networks. Production capacity continually crimes, reducing the incentive for violence and increasing the incentive for peaceful cooperation." I am not sure capitalism did anything except let the displacement of energy called (Folks, Kin, Trades) orient itself in the domain of physics. This lead to an enforced conformity of image and diversity in the logic and ethics of the system.
